How a jacket should fit across the shoulders

The shoulders are the one part of a jacket you cannot easily change. If they fit, the rest of the jacket usually falls into place.

Here is what to look for when you check a jacket in the mirror.

Find the shoulder seam

The seam where the sleeve meets the body should sit at the edge of your shoulder, right where your arm begins. If it hangs down your upper arm, the jacket is big. If it climbs toward your neck, it is small.

A relaxed cut can sit a little lower on purpose, but it should still look planned.

Check the sleeves

With your arms by your sides, the sleeve should end around your wrist bone. Reach forward as if you are driving. The cuffs should not ride far up your forearm.

Our pages list the sizes and the fit where the maker gives one, so you know the cut before you order.

Test the room to move

Hug yourself, then reach up. A jacket that pulls across the upper back is too small. A little tug when you cross your arms is normal for a fitted cut.

If you plan to wear a sweater underneath, go up one size. Our size guide explains how.

Match the cut to your build

A fitted cut like the Women's Slim Fit Biker Jacket follows the body. A regular fit like the Women's Faux Leather (PU) Blazer leaves a little more room.

Not sure? Pick the larger size. All sales are final, so measure first.

Questions and answers

Should the shoulder seam sit on my shoulder?

Yes, in most cuts. A relaxed cut may sit slightly lower.

What if my shoulders are broad?

Choose the size that fits your shoulders first. A body that is a little roomy is easier to live with than a tight back.

Can the shoulders be altered?

They are hard to change, which is why we suggest choosing carefully.
